You wanted to start a Bullet Journal or recently started one? You’re feeling overwhelmed with all these supplies everyone uses? You think you have to buy these things too, otherwise you can’t start or use a bullet journal?
I felt that way too and I was so wrong! So, that you won’t do that mistake too, I want to explain, which supplies I’m using in my daily bullet journal life and want to show you my very own journey of finding the right bullet journal supplies for me.
First of all: You don’t need something fancy to start a bullet journal!
I know a lot of people use fancy colored spreads and washi tape everywhere, but believe me, you don’t need this stuff to organize your life. For some journalers out there the bullet journal is more than a tool to organize their lifes, a sort of hobby and expression of art and creativity and that’s totally ok! Sometimes, when I’m feeling like it, I also want to spice up my journal with colors and washitapes etc. But that’s really rare in the past months and if you’re not up for it, that’s totally fine too! Don’t press yourself and keep it your way, cause that is what Bullet Journaling really is 🙂
The beginning of all
I’m Bullet Journaling since 2017 now, and at the beginning I thought, I have to buy all these fancy pens and notebooks and stuff all other Bullet Journalers out there are using. I bought a tons of washi tapes, Zebra Mildliners, Tombow Dual Brush Pens, Pigma Micron Fineliners, an A5 notebook…
The time went by and I managed to find out, which stationery supplies I really need for my daily Bullet Journaling. This comes in hand with the change of my Bullet Journal. My Bullet Journal changes a lot the past few years and that’s ok! I don’t use all these colored, washi taped spreads anymore, mostly because I’m not motivated to sit down and create a spread in one hour, when I can create it in less than 5 minutes. Maybe there will be a time, when I starting to use my Bullet Journal more as a Scrapbook than a Journal, but hey, that ok.
No washitape, no colors, so what am I using now?
My Bullet Journal that I’m currently using is a Lemome Softcover dotted A5 Notebook. I bought it from Amazon for about 9€ so it really wasn’t that expensive. Unfortunately, in the first few days after barely using this notebook (I don’t migrated my stuff by then – see my migration progress here) a few pages ripped out of the binding of the notebook. But I’m still happy with this Notebook and I’m using it anyway even if the pages are partly ripped out.
There a few pens, that I’m using in my daily Bullet Journal Life.
For daily notes and small sketches, doodles etc. I’m using the Staedler Pigment Liner in Size 0.3. At the beginning of my Bullet Journaling time I bought the Pigma Micron Fineliners, but I have to say, that the Staedler Pigment Liners are smoother on the paper, but that’s just my opinion. I carry around this pen and my notebook all the time, so that I can take notes everywhere.
As I mentioned earlier I also have the Tombow Dual Brush Pens and the one I really love the past few months is a light grey color (N95) that I’m using for highlights, header and boxes in my Bullet Journal.
I do have the 96-Pcs. Box of Tombow Dual Brush Pens, but this one is my daily favorite. I like the other colors of the Tombow Brush Pens too, but don’t use them in my Bullet Journal, except for 6 colors that I’m using for color coding my social media posts in my monthly calendar.
I also carry a pencil and a eraser with me, sometimes I want to sketch out some ideas in my journal, so there’s the pencil a good option to do that.
If I like to create some calligraphy headers I’m using the Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen in my Bullet Journal. I really like this for creating headers or quotes in my journal.
Another pen I’m using sometimes, specially for my black and white spreads is my white Signo Uniball Gel Pen. Sometimes the ink isn’t fluent enough to write on black ink, so you have to write over it again until it is completely white. Maybe I will try another white gel pen some time…
Washitape, Rulers and co.
Yeah, I do have washitape – a lot actually – but I don’t use them anymore for Bullet Journaling. Maybe there’s a time when I decide to use them more often in my journal, but now I want to go back to the basics and just focus on my productivity in my journal.
Same goes for rulers: I really like straight lines and if my whole Journal looks neat and clean etc. but I don’t want to carry around a ruler all the time just in case I have to draw a line. So I will draw all my lines without an ruler.
So far so good, you don’t have to put all your money in stationery supplies if you’re Bullet Journaling or want to start Bullet Journaling, you’re good to go with a pen and notebook of your choice 🙂
